Memorial Day is coming up in a week! Isn’t that exciting? Three-day weekend here we come! Memorial Day is on May 27th. This is a special day because this is the day we honor those men and women who died for our country’s freedoms in the past. This day is important to understand because our country relies on these people to fight for our freedoms, and we are indeed grateful for those who fought for us and their families who sacrifice so much. Thank you for this beautiful country that we are able to live in with peace.

A little boy in west Layton had his arm bitten off by a dog on Sunday Afternoon. The 4-year-old boy was trying to play with the dog and stuck his arm under the vinyl fence with a sock puppet on his hand. This is what the mother of the boy had to say about the tragedy, “On Sunday, our son was involved in a brutal attack where a husky went under our fence and bit Austin’s hand and then attempted to pull him back under the fence, Our baby lost his arm from the elbow down because it was ingested by the dog, He has multiple other bites up as well as severe bruising on his face and jaw and a black eye.” The dogs, two huskies named Polar and Bear, are now in quarantine and are at risk of being euthanized, Bear at risk most of all because he was the biter. A friend of the dog’s owner is starting a GOFUNDME to save the dogs. This was a tragic accident and all our prayers go out to the families involved. Dani Frieson We have had 44 presidents who have led us to where we are today. They have made our lives much easier and much safer. So why not celebrate a day for the men who have help us through fierce wars? Presidents Day was first established in 1885 but didn’t become a ‘Uniform Monday Holiday Act’- “an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers-” didn't get accepted until 1971. Originally this holiday was meant to celebrate Washington’s Birthday, and many states still celebrate it in that way. Now many states celebrate this holiday as honoring other presidents. Although many stopped celebrating this day that is on the third week of February every year. There still is a way that many people remember Washington’s birthday. Most American are celebrating him on February 22nd. In the 2000’s, 50% of the United States has changed their calendar to officially say Presidents Day. “Congressional measures to restore Washington and Lincoln’s individual birthdays were proposed during the early 2000’s, but all failed to gain much attention. For its part, the federal government has held fast to the original incarnation of the holiday as celebration of the country’s first president. The third Monday in February is still listed on official calendars as Washington's Birthday.” (https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/presidents-day) Brynli Francom On Valentine’s day, some people go out on date nights, go to dinner, exchange presents, hang out with friends, and for some, think like it’s any other day. Valentine’s day is very popular in the United States, which is why I am talking about it. Some cute gift ideas are: poems, candy, and chocolate roses that you can buy here at the school for only $1 for your friends or your one true love....... Happy Valentine’s Day! Makayla Wood Those concerned that robots are taking over the world can rest easy – for now. Though the androids have proved useful at performing mundane tasks, they are not ready for prime time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s cutting-edge Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff is being replaced by humans. The first location of the aptly named Henn-na ("strange" in Japanese) Hotel opened with much fanfare at Nagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park in July 2015. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, envisioned the futuristic lodging to be managed primarily by intelligent robots with minimal human interaction. Guests were greeted and checked-in by either a family-friendly English-speaking dinosaur robot or a Japanese-speaking humanoid. Autonomous robot porters stood ready to help guests’ carry luggage to their rooms, while a cute doll-shaped android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided them with information about nearby attractions. Even the hotel’s garbage cans were robotic. Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world's first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world. Spurred by the success, Sawada opened seven additional locations across Japan and announced plans to build at least 50 more. But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw – its employees – are becoming less of a novelty and more of a nuisance. Also, as the robots are “aging” they are costing more to repair and maintain. Earlier this month, the hotel chain’s parent company H.I.S. announced that it had decided to “fire” over half of the robot employees and replace them with humans. Brynli Francom
As you may know, the new Netflix series “Bird Box” just came out in December. The series became fairly popular, and eventually turned into a meme and then a challenge. The challenge is to cover your eyes with a mask, like in the movie, to avoid ‘death’ (in the movie). But in this case, a 16 and 17 year-old girls went straight for death. These two girls attend Layton High School, and while driving their car, they did the challenge. They steered off to the other lane in Layton Park Way, hitting a car and a lamp post. We advise everyone to do the challenge (if you are wanting to) with extreme precaution and not to do it in times of when your life is at risk. Thank you. If you don’t know who Stan Lee was, he was a comic book writer from the 1940s-2010 for marvel. Stan lee was a very great person, we will never forget the person who started it all for marvel. Stan lee was a very influential person, and entertained many. Stan lee once said, “The only advice anybody can give is, if you wanna be a writer, keep writing. And read all you can, read everything.” This quote shows to follow your dreams to keep doing what you want, just like Stan Lee. New York times provides useful information about Stanley. It says, “If all that entertainment product can be traced to one person, it would be Stan Lee, who died in Los Angeles on Monday at 95. From a cluttered office on Madison Avenue in Manhattan in the 1960s, he helped conjure a lineup of pulp-fiction heroes that has come to define much of popular culture in the early 21st century.” Stan lee provided loads of entertainment for everyone. Without this amazing writer we would not have all the amazing characters from marvel we have today. Stan lee is greatly appreciated. Stan lee’s work will always be remembered. We take for granted amazing things that we have, this can teach us a lesson (near thanksgiving) to be more thankful of what we have. Marvel would never be here without him. We wouldn’t have spider man, black widow, hulk, iron man, Captin America, Thor, or any of those favorite characters. Thanks Stan Lee for all you did! picture-https://www.independent.co.uk
Makayla Wood Virtual reality (VR)-enhanced roller coasters that keep fans at the edge of their seats are not a new concept. Visitors aboard the Superman: Ride of Steel coaster at Six Flags in Maryland have been immersing themselves in the superhero’s world since 2016, while those aboard Cedar Point, Ohio’s suspended Iron Dragon ride have been dodging ogres and orcs since 2017. But given that water does not bode well for the sensitive VR electronics, the experience has been harder to offer for water slides. That, however, changed recently with the opening of the Space Glider, the world’s first VR water slide. Located at Europe’s biggest water park, the Galaxy Erding in South Germany, the ride takes the exciting experience to a whole new level by offering thrill-seekers the choice of three fascinating worlds – Space, Sky, or Snow. By simply strapping on a headset, riders can glide through a magical alien world, follow beautiful butterflies around floating islands, or immerse themselves in a white winter wonderland. To make the experience even more heart-stopping, the 160-meter (520-ft)-long ride that lasts about 35 seconds has two uphill tracks that provide a roller coaster-like journey. By: Makayla Wood It’s that time of year once again, seeing all the decorations and shopping getting done. Christmas is right around the corner, 4 weeks away. Christmas music is one of the best ways to kick off the holiday cheer. 55% of the students and teachers at our school have started listen to those Christmas classics like Deck the Halls, Silent Night, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, etc. Some people start listening to these cheerful tones as soon as November 1st and some wait till after the craze of Thanksgiving. Then we have those Christmas Grinch’s that don’t like or listen to holiday music at all. No matter your opinion on Christmas music, some find the joy and peace in this time of the year. Christmas is the time of giving and can help people through these stress filled week. Music is an outlet for many to express themselves. Music can change the way people interact with family and friends, it can bring us closer to those that matter most. Christmas music is important to remember the reason behind Christmas. It isn’t all about the presents, it’s about those that surround you and how you can help them this season. picture-88pianokeys.me
Jennifer Pendleton As we know Black Friday began during our Thanksgiving Break on the 23rd. So, what is Black Friday? Black Friday is when you receive crazy deals on the day after thanksgiving. You can pretty much go to any store on this day and they will have a sale. Over the years of Black Friday, it has become more and more popular. Many people who are extra crazy for this event wake up early in the morning (4:30 am). Many people save their money for this event. Others go shopping for Christmas gifts on this day. Why is it called Black Friday? Many of us are used the term, Black Friday. Many though, do not know what it means. From www.thebalance.com it says, “It was originally called Black Friday because so many people went out to shop that it caused traffic accidents and sometimes even violence. The Philadelphia Police Department coined the phrase to describe the mayhem surrounding the congestion of pedestrian and auto traffic in the downtown area.” As read, Black Friday is very popular. Popular enough for traffic accidents and violence. Black Friday has become so crazy, that people are becoming too violent. Www.thebalance.com also said, “It was originally called Black Friday because so many people went out to shop that it caused traffic accidents and sometimes even violence. The Philadelphia Police Department coined the phrase to describe the mayhem surrounding the congestion of pedestrian and auto traffic in the downtown area.” How did Black Friday start? Black Friday started near 1969, but how did it start? Www.history.com says, “The first recorded use of the term “Black Friday” was applied not to holiday shopping but to financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869.” Black Friday was not always a fun holiday, this event eventually evolved into, Black Friday. Who knew that this event in history could end up as a “holiday”? picture by-syfywire
