Do you like to run, jump, compete, or hang with friends? Then track is the sport for you! Track is a fun running sport where students here at CDJH have the opportunity to compete and use their talents to help our school! Here is where you can make new records, new talents, and new friends! The track meets are in the month of April, with perfect weather. Girls, we need more of you to come run for us, as there aren’t many, especially in distance running. See Mr. Donaldson, Mr. Powell, or Mr. Hunt for more information. We hope to see you there! By: Jennifer Pendleton Volleyball has gotten off to a great start for varsity, jr. Varsity, and the 7th grade team. The volleyball team has made many great wins! CDJH, please support the volleyball team by going to their games. The volleyball team has only a few games left. Volleyball is a team sport and takes a lot of effort. This team has put a lot of work into volleyball to help represent CDJH. The next volleyball game will be this Monday and it is a home game. Games always start at 3:15 after school and end around 5:00-5:30. Volleyball is an amazing sport. Makayla Carrigan said, "It is so much fun to be on the volleyball team because I would have never made as much friends as I have now. I also have never played volleyball ever and I have just gained another sport that I love. Even though it can be though sometimes it is super worth it to hang out with friends after school everyday. When we do not have practice my day got boring it brings out the fun part of me after being at school all day." As Makayla said it is fun! Volleyball is a great sport to learn. It is also a great way to make friends. Many of you might be interested in volleyball. People should first know that volleyball is a big team sport. It takes a lot of talking and quick action. In this sport, there are 6 players on the court. The back row have 3 passers that try to get the ball to the setter. On the front row there is the setter, this is an important job. The setter tries to set the ball to the spiker. Another position is middle blocker. Middle blocker is usually the tallest person who blocks the ball from the other side. The last player is the spiker. The spiker is near the outside of the court. That is how volleyball works, if it sounds fun give it a try! By: Spencer QuantzThe National Academic League is a group of the best and brightest from across the school and throughout many areas across the United States. Our N.A.L. team this year has done remarkable with a straight victory with no loss season! We have had some of the biggest point margin victories in our schools history and have really showed up to play! Our team led by Sammy Jacobs a three year N.A.L. veteran has performed remarkably in all of their games and is riled up and ready to go for the post-season games. Because of their no loss victory streak they have been put automatically in the championship game. This will be coming up soon, and they will be going against Centennial Junior High. They have been working tirelessly over the last month in practices to improve their chances of winning and to be prepared for their different matches.
For those of you who don't know what N.A.L is, it is a competition of academics where some of the smartest students from the schools compete. It starts out with the first quarter where we have individual students facing off against the other team one-on-one answering question to receive points for their team after a tip-off question. The second quarter consists of a group answering the questions. The five person buzzer teams works together to answer more lengthy questions amongst themselves in a head to head race against the other team. The third quarter is the team presentation. Teams are given a question after tip-off to do research on and they have all of first and second quarter to prepare for a presentation straight to the judges to receive additional points. During the fourth and last quarter, everyone on the team participates in a round similar to first quarter where they go around answering the questions. The one with the most points at the end wins! Good job to our N.A.L. team here at Central Davis and we wish you the best of luck for post season! By: Ashton Merkley This Monday, January 8th, our NAL team had played their second game of the year, completely devastating the opposing team. Ever since last year, our NAL team has had some of the best players of any seasons. Although our team had not won without some close cases. Eventually our team had won the game with a score of 58-24 points overall.
With this team being phenomenal, they quickly paved the road down onto victory lane. The aid of Andrew's along with Samuel Jacobs and their other teammates, the confidence quickly increased with every grueling point earned. It was not achieved without loss. We would also like to give a shout out to the third quarter presentation team giving the team a hard push towards victory! "The game was great, we trashed them!" Stated a very confident Logan Wayman. Ultimately, they did succeed in winning the game, as the score tells, they were not shaken by the points accumulated by the opposing team. Luckily thanks to our players playing a valiant fight, we came out in the end with a win, with many more to come from our NAL team! By: Mara Wilkes Sports, sports, and more sports! As the new year presents new possibilities, Central Davis’s wrestling team is now open and starting off with wrestling intramurals, let’s make CDJH’s team great again and cheer them on! Last year we had such a great team and we are excited to see what this team can put on the table.
This wrestling season will last until at least March of 2018. The intramurals will end on January 24th where the next meet will be on Wednesday January 31st, where they’ll then start conditioning. Wrestling matches will begin on February 13th where the team will be at Mueller Park. Let’s hope that this new team can show what CDJH is made of, if you have the time come and support your school by going to matches and being there for your team! Show them a little love, and let’s have a good year for wrestling! By: Spencer QuantzFollowing the end of the boys basketball season, we were all eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next sport. And now we have it! The girls basketball season is well underway with some high expectations to uphold. The previous sports team shave done well, and now it is time for the girls basketball team to shine! The first game went well and were ready to see where the rest of them take us.
So come on down and support our amazing girls basketball team and our athletics department. These students exemplify the physical prowess of the students at Central Davis, so come on down and support our team! By: Ashton Merkley Women's tryouts were Monday, December 4. These tryouts were early in the morning and resulted in first cuts. Luckily we have high expectations for them. If all goes well, this will result in one strong basketball season. Seeing as how our boy's team charged into battle head-strong and with valiance, we expect nothing less form the females.
Girl's basketball shows promise, in all that they do. Performance in tryouts was supposedly some of the best ever seen. Overall, both basketball teams have proven themselves, in all the eyes of their peers. Succeeding in this battle of grace and wit comes much needed strength and the girl's that made first cuts have evidently done so. Proving themselves in our eyes was simple, but in the eyes of other's not so much. Should they succeed they will receive their much needed praise. By: Ashton Merkley Central Davis Junior high held its annual basketball tryouts on Monday Oct. 9! Monday was a fresh day, new meat lining up for the hardships they are about to face. "I don't wanna' be cocky, but I do not want to be underconfident." A young Ethan Sander said before he had basketball tryouts. The warm ups Coach Rivera put his pupils to, doesn't seem like much, although were not on the playing field we can't say much. These warm ups stretch out a one's agility and endurance with ladders, and laps. Then they go onto even more stretching while everyone separates into their own social group. Although we all can agree that warm ups aren't supposed to be as competitive as they were, it's encouraging to see everyone's spirit and passion towards basketball.
Throughout the tryouts we got a glimpse into the surprisingly competitive life of a junior high basketball test. In the beginning you were able to see despair in some pupil's eyes but that is equally matched with beatitude. As you slowly progress into the minds of those participating in tryouts, everyone begins to either develop determination or a fond feeling of content. Thus, raising the spirits through somewhat of bonding. Although some may define this as somewhat basic, there is so much more that goes into this "simple" tryout. Being a spectator in this closed gym tryout was a nice little experience, and I'd like to thank Coach Rivera for allowing me to do so. We cannot teach height, but we can everything else, stated Mr. Turpin. What Mr. Turpin said, can be proven with the likes of a man named Cameron Voorhees. This young man is in the eighth grade and was excelling at basketball although being significantly less height wise. Observing this prodigy was almost as if you're watching a song unfold before your eyes. Basketball tryouts were a hit, as so many people ranging from ninth to seventh graders came and attended. It was abnormal to see the expression on the students' faces fluctuate between dedication and bliss as Coach Rivera changed the activity to a 3V3 match off. Attendance, adherence, and euphoria, it was almost a psychedelic experience. This has been a successful tryout and well done to all who participated. See you at next year's tryouts! By: Ashton Merkley Sadly, our valiant and graceful home team has ended the season until next year, as of now Briele Hall (Manager) stated that they would've won had they been trying their hardest, but of course you need to give them a chance. Our of the volleyball games we attended, there was nothing short of perfection in our girls' performance. The popularity of the games was high for a junior high match, but the way the team performed, if the schoolboard saw them we would be getting renovated for a new gym.
"Although we lost, throughout the season we worded well individually and as a team." Madison Wilcox stated. It was almost fluid, seeing the team cooperate and how they worked on the field. Sure, every once in awhile the team had its mistakes, but what team doesn't? This team was as close to perfect as you can get. Their cooperation was precise and they were able to keep the ball in motion almost as if it was flowing water. Their pristine plays and hard work led the team to many victories, but I send my regards as finals was within their grasps. Unfortunately their utter defeat led to the end of this year's season. This team did an amazing job, and concluding their epis is this memorial to everyone who supported and performed in the games. The team did outstanding and deserves so much praise. Although they lost in the end, we all know who the real winners were. Seeing how many ankles they broke was phenomenal, well done team! Knowing some of the plays and how caring they are towards everyone wrenches at the heart. Congratulations to the team for their lionhearted charge and well done! Good luck next year! By: Caitlen KelloggThe game on Monday started out strong with our game against South Davis. It was a very intense game at times; we tied, we fell behind, then we’d pass them. We would score and the they would score. The crowd would go wild.
In the first half, we started out strong. South Davis kept pulling ahead by a few points. After a while we tied and got ahead. We put the score at 16-13. Then we tied again at 19-19. Afterwards, South Davis won the first half with a score of 25-27. We tried our hardest but it wasn’t quite enough. The next half was also very though. In the second half, Central Davis tried to pull ahead at the very beginning, but then South Davis put the score at 0-3. Then we tied the game at 11-11. Ariel Jaramillo had a prediction that, “ Central Davis is going to win by so much!” But South Davis kept pulling ahead and ended the game at 18-24. We lost. Although we tried our hardest, we lost. We had a great season an made it really far I hope next year can be just as good as this one. We won a lot of games and had a great team. This team was a family and hopefully next years will be as well. Sources- Ariel Jaramillo, the game. By:Caitlen Kellogg There are two games this week. The first is on October 2 and the second game is on October 4. The first game is a home game and the second is to be determined. Our first game was against South Davis.
The games will be right after school at 3:00 and will last until around 4:00 to 4:30. To my knowledge, it is free to get into the games. The first games was with South Davis and we aren’t sure if we will have a second game yet. Alyssa Jackson, 9th grader said, “Yeah I’m excited! They have been doing really good this year so I hope they win.” Another girl had a different opinion. She said that she hopes that they loose so that they can learn more about teamwork. She has requested to say anonymous. Be sure that you come support your volleyball team on the 2nd and 4th of October at 3:00. I hope that I can see you all there. By: Spencer QuantzAre you ready for the next sport? Basketball conditioning began on Monday, September 25th and will be continuing on until Thursday, September 28th. It is after school from 3:15-4:15 and according to Coach Freestone, Coach Rivera makes it rough. So come ready to work and improve your skills.
Tryouts for the basketball team will be held October 9th afterschool. Conditioning is a great opportunity to get ready for tryouts and will greatly increase your chances of getting on the team. Coach Freestone, when asked to give a piece of advice to those trying out, said, “Work hard and make sure you’re practicing.” We asked a student what his favorite basketball team was and why, Ammon Frost said, “I don’t watch basketball because soccer is better than basketball. So make sure if you want to be able to do your best during tryouts, follow Coach Freestone’s advice and work hard and keep on practicing. If you have any questions regarding to basketball conditioning, tryouts, or manager positions, talk to Coach Freestone or Coach Rivera. By: Ashton Merkley September 18, 2017 our Central Volleyball team had a home game, where they lionheartedly charged headlong into the fight, and reigned victorious. This year’s team has shown their true valorous spirits. This game was a home game, fought against North Layton Junior High, and although we ultimately won, this victory did not come without any rigors. Before the game, the girls and officers, as well as the cheerleaders had a rallying shout, intimidating those of the opposing team, and inspiring those on our own team. This battle was orchestrated beautifully, and when asked how she felt the team did Maddie Wilcox said, “I think we did grea… amazing!”
North Layton started off with the headmost point, and even though they had many close calls, a small advantage would not diminish our girls' spirits. Although North Layton fought hard, Central fought harder, and even though Central started off losing by three points, we quickly made a comeback and ties. Our team slowly sets the stride for how things will be played, and we start gaining a lead on North Layton. Central begins to lead off with more and more points stacking, making it less probable for North Layton to become the underdog. As clear as it was that North Layton was going to lose, they continued to fight and not let a point lead, lead to their downfall. When asked who they thought would win Lauren Small a ninth grader at North Layton Junior High regarded her team as winning because she knows how her team cooperates. Obviously that was not the case in the first half, will North Layton redeem themselves in the second half? Once second half rolls around, Central clearly possessing more spirit, trumps the competition. Making it evident that overconfidence has gotten the better of them; North Layton starts to slowly diminish, putting in their final effort which showed no signs of success. To err is human, and I speak for everyone when I say there is no error made in the Central Davis Junior High’s volleyball game. They truly made it “their game” when they started off leading 8-2. Both teams are fluctuating with who scores what and when. Once Central thinks they had the lead, their envy and sloth got the better of them and their lead started to wane. Quickly Central Realized what was going on and led their team to a victory with a 12 point lead. Central wins yet again! By: Caitlen KelloggHey Cubs! Come support the awesome Volleyball team this week at the games! We have two games this week and were going to rock it! our first game is at Syracuse on Monday and our second is on Wednesday at Fairfield Jr.
Our syracuse game will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and its the same for the Fairfield game so make sure that you come! Don’t forget to come! Remember, September 11 and September 13! Hope to see you there! By: Laurelin Wilson On September 6, 2017, the Central Davis Volleyball team played a game against Legacy Jr. High. All the girls worked hard, and it turned out to be a very intense, and very close game. Our girls started out strong, scoring the first point within thirty seconds. They hit hard neat the beginning, bringing the score to 4-1. However, the Legacy Silverwolves then began to fight back. They gained three more points, but our team snuck up behind them when it came to score. The score soon tied, and then Central started to pull ahead. The points were 10-7 when the girls were awarded a much-needed break.
After the break, we continued to keep our lead, but Legacy wasn't going down without a fight. The score was a clean tine, 19-19, with about five minutes left in the round. Luckily, our wonderful team gained back the lead at the last minute, bringing the total to 25-23, and winning the first round. Unfortunately, the pressure got to the girls in the second round. They fought valiantly, but somehow were always a few points behind. That didn't stop them from having wonderful teamwork and cooperation skills, however. They were very coordinated, and their perfectly practiced moves resulted in several awesome spikes. The third round was anyone's game. Mr. Woodbrey, a teacher who attended the game, remarked, " I was scared for them, but they really pulled through." And Dawslyn LeFevre, a student at Central, commented that the girls were so stunning. She's extremely proud of them. In the third round, even though Legacy scored the first couple points, Central soon pulled ahead and left them in the dust. The game ended in a wonderful win by Central. We're all eager to see how far the team is going to go. By: Spencer Quantz Where do track athletes go to get another uniform? New Jersey! Our 2017 track season has come to a close with some fast times and some high scores. All of the member have been running their hearts out, all the while competing in meets and now North Ends and the district meet.
Our North end results were spectacular! North End was held at Syracuse high, yielding awesome results. Some of the best of the best would then compete in the latter district meet. The district meet was held at Woods Cross High and around fifteen of our team superstars represented our school and showed the amazing talent of our athletes. Now, with it being the end of the track season, we asked some students to reflect on the 2017 track season. Brady Larsen said, “It was fun and I think I got faster.” And Parker Mackey said, “I thought we did pretty great and I was excited for the people who made district. The shotput and throwing people were great. It was a fun year, and I’m excited for the next one.” Great job on a good year, and let’s hope for a great one next year! By: Spencer Quantz Are you ready to race? Our first track meet ended with a bang with some fast times and high scores. Nicholas Murray finished the boy’s mile in second place with an astonishing speed of five minutes and fifteen seconds.
We asked him what to expect during the next meet, Nicholas commented, “I’m expecting to do better than last time and get first place in the mile.”’ The next track meet will be held on April 27, 2017 at Northridge high school and is sure to show some spectacular results. And for those of you who aren’t competing be sure to come and help cheer our team to victory. We asked some track members what they were excited for during this meet. Brady Larsen said, “I’m excited for the rain and cold.” And Ammon Frost said “The mile and the 800.” Our team has been working hard and is ready to show off our school’s talent. We will be running, jumping, and throwing our way to victory. So come on down and show your school spirit by supporting our track team. By Brooke Glauser Our last team sport begins, and are extremely excited. Track begins very soon. The first meet will be held on April 10th. Two events that our school's Track team will be competing in, according to 8th grader Lydia Muster, are hurdles and the 200 meter dash. There are a couple of other events that the team will be competing in, but these are the few that Lydia will be running.
Track coach Mrs. Starkey was asked why she enjoys coaching. She said, "I like being outside, and I like seeing people discipline themselves." 8th Grader Sydney Barlow mentioned that she enjoys participating in Track because it keeps her in shape. Great reason Sydney and good luck in your first meet! So good luck to this year's Track team in all of the events they will be competing in this season, as well as the many more to come. Hopefully, our team will be successful in many, if not all, of the events, such as sprints, long distance, hurdles, and relays. By Bethany Prescott On Tuesday, December 13th, Central Davis’s girls’ basketball team faced Muellar Park’s girls basketball team for the first game of the season. Muellar Park got ahead in the first quarter with 9 points to 4. Central sadly never caught up to the Panthers. In the fourth quarter the girls fought harder than ever and closed the gap between them and Muellar Park. The end score was Muellar Park 24, central Davis 20. The next home game will be Tuesday, December 20th, against Farmington Huskies.
Brianna Vaughan said, “I go to all the home games and know most of the cheers. Going to the games are fun.” Most of the other students said the girls could have played better Go to the next home game on Tuesday, December 20th, and support the girls. By: John Rodrigues Round 2, here we come! Central Davis won round one against the Mueller Park Panthers on Tuesday November 28th in a nail biter that went to the final whistle. The Panthers trailed by three and scored an apparent game-tying three pointer, but the refs called it a two pointer saying the shooter’s toes were on the line. They intentionally fouled Perry Poppe to get one more shot to win tie it. He missed the first shot but made the second to make it a 2-point game. Mueller Park inbounded the ball with only 3 seconds left but couldn’t get the half-court shot in the hoop giving the Cubs a first round win. “That was crazy!” yelled Zachary Stanton after the game. The next game is on Thursday, December 1st at Centennial.
By Hailey Randall On Tuesday, November 15th, our very own CDJH boys’ basketball team went up against the Sunset students. By the end of the first quarter, both teams were tied. The rest of the game was mostly back and forth. Isaac Vaha shot and made a 3 pointer at mid-game!
In the end, Sunset won, but Central put up a great fight. The team is hoping to win the next game! When asked what she thought about the game, Shay Bunker said, “It went pretty good… it was the alumni game.” Curtis Cunningham said that it was really exciting. By Brookelyn Glauser Girls basketball conditioning will begin on Wednesday, November sixteenth. Girls who are interested can sign up and go after school on the sixteenth. Mrs. Murphy and Mr. Hunt are the coaches. Nikki Spencer says, “I’m trying out because I have figured out in the past years that I was very good at it.” Jackie Stigle was on the team last year and says that it’s fun, you can make new friends, it’s a good bonding experience, and you can “exercise off the food you eat, #gottalovethatfrosting”
By: Hailey Randall Team Handball Intramurals are happening now! For those who have signed up, games are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:00am. The first game was on October 25th. For those of you who don’t know what intramurals are, they are fun sports competitions between teams. You can join the Recreation Division, the Competitive Division, or the Coed Division. The Recreation Division is for those who are in it for the fun rather than the competition. The Competitive Division are for competitive students, and the Coed Division is the mixed gender division. In addition to those, there is also an all-girls division. If you have any questions about Intramurals, ask Mr. Donaldson and get a sign-up sheet from him.
By: Bethany Prescott If you like basketball, get excited because the season is officially a week underway!
The Cubs’ second home game of the season was on 25 October against Centerville. It was a tough game from the start as the halftime score was 28-17 Centerville. Coach Rivera made some halftime adjustments but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs fell 46-30. Perry Poppe said, “We didn’t play as good as we should have.” The game’s atmosphere was crazy and there was a great turnout. Justin Breismaster said he had a great time and he will definitely go to more of the games. Overall, the game was really fun and if you get the chance, you should go to some games! By: Bethany Prescott Central Davis vs. Milcreek
On October 18th, Central’s boys’ basketball team played Milcreek for the first game of the season. It was also the first game for the new boys’ basketball team. Nathan Walton, a member of the new basketball team, said he joined the team because he likes playing basketball. Milcreek and Central fought for the ball going back and forth across the court. In the first half, central easily got a lead and kept it. Marlene Stephani said that her favorite part of the game was, “In the beginning when it was getting intense, and everyone’s focus was on everybody. And the crowd was screaming.” Central won 59 to 23. The crowd was huge and helped support the team. Go to the game this week and help support the Central Davis boys’ basketball team. |
